Atoom: Kleinst mogelijke deeltje van een zuivere stof met de eigenschappen van
die stof
Element: Stof die bestaat uit alleen maar dezelfde atomen

Samenstelling atomen
Kern: Protonen en Neutronen
Om de kern draaien elektronen in een wolk.
De protonen, neutronen en elektronen zijn de bouwstenen van de atomen. Deze
vertonen zelf geen eigenschappen die specifiek zijn voor een element. Als je met
verschillende bouwstenen verschillende atomen bouwt krijg je verschillende
elementen met verschillende eigenschappen.

In een atoom zitten evenveel protonen als elektronen.

Periodiek systeem
Hierin staan alle elementen, gerangschikt op
atoomnummer.
Het atoomnummer = aantal protonen in de kern
Wanneer het aantal protonen in de kern toeneemt, nemen het aantal neutronen
ook toe. De elementen in het periodiek systeem nemen dus ook toe in massa en
volume.
