Campaign of Nuclear Disarmament in Britain
o In 1958 the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) was formed
in Britain.
o It called for nuclear disarmament and tighter regulations regarding
production.
o They organised a 4 day march from London to the Atomic Weapons
Research Establishment in Aldermaston.
o They adopted the peace symbol as their logo.
San Francisco to Moscow Walk for Peace
o A peace walk from San Francisco, US, to Moscow, USSR, took place
from December 1960 to October 1961.
o This San Francisco to Moscow Walk for Peace was organized by
Committee for Nonviolent Action and promoted nonviolence and
nuclear disarmament.
Other examples of Nuclear Protest in the USA
o On November 1 1961, at the height of the Cold War, about 50 000
women brought together by Women Strike for Peace marched in 60
cities in the United States to demonstrate against nuclear weapons.
It was the largest national women's peace protest of the 20th
century.
o There were many anti-nuclear protests in the United States which
captured national public attention during the 1970s and 1980s.
These included the well-known Clamshell Alliance, a group that
formed in 1976 that held a protest at the Seabrook Station Nuclear
Power Plant
o The Abalone Alliance, formed in 1977, held protests at Diablo
Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, where thousands of protesters were
arrested.
