Essay 3000 words Innovation

Before describing which businesses are the innovation pioneer in the visitor economy, it is
essential to understand the definition of the visitor economy is. The visitor economy is a
complex concept which many authors found difficult to defined with few words.
Realistically, the visitor economy comprehends myriad businesses which some of them are at
the specific disposition of tourism and hospitality whenever others are everyday businesses
running for the locals, however, still having connection with tourists since are indirectly
consumers for also these businesses. Therefore, the visitor economy has strong connection
with various activities starting from transport, shops, sports to entertainments and culture
such as art, museums and music events.
In fact, the visitor economy helped the growth of England’s economy by identify which skills
needed for supporting SME’s and other organisation linked to tourism and hospitality but
also for taking in consideration the involvement of local community improving the
destination image increasing employment status for the region by understanding the
infrastructure needed, improving natural attraction, identifying the labour needed for the
tourism and hospitality industry and improving the availability and safety for heritage sites
and a clean efficient transport. A definition from Balding extracted from Deyan (2015)
journal, explained that the visitor economy is a concept where it:
“Takes account broader economy activity that has been historically defined as
tourism and events. It encompasses the direct and indirect contributions to the economy
resulting from a visitor travelling outside their usual environment for holiday, leisure,
events” ( Deyan, 2015).
Similarly, the visitor economy is useful in term to determine the economy outcome detracted
by overall businesses statistic linked to tourism and hospitality activities direct and indirect
including governmental and private businesses. This metric can then measure in contrast with
other economy to benchmark the GDP growth or decline comparing with other nationalities.
The significant part for this essay is to critically evaluate which businesses within the visitor
economy is the pioneers of innovation. Before starting the evaluation about the businesses
pioneer innovator for this essay, the author would prior consider what are the nowadays
challenges for the visitor economy. For more than a decade issues linked to the climate
changes and pollution emerged on our everyday life. From the news to the internet, almost
everyday people witness disastrous natural events in connection with climate change and
pollution. Besides, the travel industry relies largely to the natural environment and
landscapes. If such environment is damaged, and often cannot be reached due to flooding,
wildfire or earthquake, a holiday destination might completely disappear to the holiday’s
dreamers’ eyes.
The problematic fact about climate change is that has not been addressed for years making
the situation deteriorating to the point that many tourist destinations now have rigid
restrictions due to the climate change which has made many destinations too fragile for

, welcoming visitors. An example is the Thailand’s Maya Bay and Boracay Island in the
Philippines which are both closed to the tourists to help the destination to recover from the
damaged made by the pollution of mass tourism. More destinations are supposed to disappear
at the end of 2100 due to climate change since scientists predicted the rise of sea level related
to the ice melting in the North Pole. Some of these destinations are Venice and the Great
Barrier Reef (Haugen,2019). The tourism sector acknowledges the fact that climate change is
a threat for their businesses which can affect the visitor economy outcome as well. Thus, one
of the challenges for the visitor economy is the climate change and pollution, and
stakeholders should collaborate together for tackling those issues as the best they can to
delaying the damage incurred for these destinations.
According to the Local Government association (2016) The visitor economy contributed
£121.1 billion to UK GDP for that year. Consequently, the travel and hospitality industry
with the visitor economy are researching strategies for incrementing a major boost to the
economy for the UK. The tourism sector is aware about the damages incurred by tourists to
the already long-haul flight for crowded and well-known demanded destinations. Therefore,
the visitor economy needs to address it’s “ecological footprint” by promoting more domestic
breaks. Boosting the economy in the UK’s local places can be a solution in reducing long-
haul flights by persuading tourists visiting local region areas with the use of marketing
campaign by advertising more those places and arranging the attractiveness of the place
making it more appealing for visitors by using innovative solutions.
For example, new actual trends which are related to the product innovation for the hospitality
sector are the type of accommodations situated to countryside such as; glamour camping,
Hobbit-Themed hide-ways, chapels, Castles, treehouse etc..( The Guardian,2020). This
Architectural innovation based on the Abernathy and Clark model (Hjalager, 2002),
facilitates the increment of domestic holidays in the UK and fulfil the employment rate for
those nonurban areas. Similarly, for thriving the new domestic holiday trend in the UK’s
countryside, issues related to the climate change need to be addressed by the UK government,
the tourism and hospitality industry, and the visitor economy on finding solution on
preserving the today environment, and for future generations. Unfortunately, the climate
change impacted negatively to various tourism nonurban locations in the UK. For example,
the climate change exacerbates significantly the risk of Moorland wildfire in the Peak District
National Park occurred by changes in vegetation cover. Another significant problem linked to
the climate change for the Lake District National Park is the footpath erosion critical
deteriorating due to recurred intense rainfall (Mcevoy, 2006).
Thus, the visitor economy is not only considered for the economic importance but also linked
to the tourism sector which mostly influenced by climate changes. The above statement
reveals the important connection the environment has with the climate change and the visitor
economy for the England’s Northwest region which a research was commissioned for a more
depth exploration for the climate change and the visitor economy (CCVE) (Mcevoy, 2006).
According to the evolution of our lifestyles and continues changes in our environment, and
the constant competition among competitors; scientists and scholars creates inventions and
business models to overcome specific issues and problems by easing tasks and increasing
production with the tactic of a new operation system or solving demands with a new product.
After that, who first applies such system or makes the invention into functionality out in the
market for the use of the public; are often defined as pioneers of innovation.
