1. INTRODUCTION
This section will give a background to the research that will be conducted we will be motivating
our research problem below. We will explain what issues will arise with our investigating, including
why it is a problem that needs to be investigated.
Education in schools plays an important role in the economy of South Africa, because
they are the future builders of the economy and sustaining a healthy and growing country.
Covid 19 changed the whole world and had a great impact on South Africa and therefore
also affecting the school education system. New teaching methods had to be created to
ensure the safety of the students and the teachers. This had a big impact on students and
teachers to adjust and approach teaching methods in a new way. In some of the provinces,
there were not enough resources to ensure the safety of children and university students.
Many parents could not afford to place their children in school or university due to the
increase in unemployment work rate, and many parents lost their jobs or had to take pay
cuts just to stay afloat. South Africa was one of the countries with the most Covid 19
deaths per day and also responsible for the new type of Covid that was called the Delta
string. This brought on more challenges for schools. In rural areas students couldn’t afford
a laptop or internet so that they could complete their homework and stay up to date.
Throughout all this problem South Africa faces big challenges with the employment rate
and lack of resources in schools to give students a fair chance at education.[1][2]
2. Research Question
The research problem is: How did Covid 19 affecting the school system and what
was the effect on the teachers and the students?
3. Literature review
Sahu P (April 04, 2020) conducted an experiment and his findings was shocking. He conducted a
study on the mental health and how Covid spread like a wild fire throughout the world from China.
He recorded that more than 170 countries have serious problems in containing the spread of the
disease.
He explains in detail how the virus spread from China and how the USA, Africa and Europe
students just can’t handle online studies. This has a ripple effect because they need face to face
interaction with a teacher for them to exceed in their studies. Another concern he found was that
may students face mental health issues because they simply can’t take the pressure to succeed
under these circumstances. If you read this article, you can just see the ripple effect it has on our
youth.[3]
