developmental domains of children.
2. Discuss the context in which children in South Africa live.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of quality of life in relation to children.
4. Explain the importance of early childhood and demonstrate knowledge of the
important elements of the first 1000 days.
5. Demonstrate knowledge and insight into childhood care and caregiving.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of basic interventions in working with a child.

Assessment criteria
To provide evidence of the achievements of the unit outcomes indicated above, the student
must be able to:
1. Understand a child and discuss the phases and developmental domains of children
from a holistic perspective
2. Be aware of the context in which children in South Africa navigate and how this may
affect their wellbeing.
3. Know and debate the basic needs of children from the quality-of-life perspective.
4. Reflect briefly on the risks and protective factors within the first 1000 days, including
the relevance of legislation within the South African context.
5. Understand care and caregiving in relation to the child within the South African context.
6. Be aware of and be able to discuss appropriate strategies in interventions with children
from a holistic perspective, including working with parents and the community.
