Self-Care Concept Analysis The nursing concept that I have chosen is self-care; the nursing theory from which the selected concept was obtained is from Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory. Orem’s self-care theory was first published in “Nursing: Concepts of Practice” in 1971 [Nur125]. In this paper I will discuss definition/explanation of the nursing concept, self-care, there will also be a literature review of the concept, I will go over defining attributes of self-care, I will present antecedent’s and consequences of self-care, there will be two empirical referents identified, I will create a model case and there will be two alternative cases as well. The role of concept analysis is a “critical component of work related to understanding, defining and describing the foundation of nursing knowledge” [Chi13]. Definition/Explanation of Selected Nursing Concept Self-care is defined by as care of self without any medical or other professional consultations [Def171]. “Self-care is a human regulatory function that persons must perform for themselves in order to maintain life. Self-care must be learned and it must be deliberately performed. As a result, persons through this learning, exercise intellectual and practical skills to manage themselves to sustain the motivation essential for daily care in an effective manner” [The141]. The self-care theory is mainly concerned with establishing what self-care means. Orem’s theory of self-care states that “self-care is a practice of activities that the individual initiates and performs on their own behalf in maintaining life, health and well-being” [Nur125]. Within self-care there is an agent, “a human ability which is the ability for engaging in self-care conditioned by developmental state, life experience, sociocultural orientation, and health” [Nur125]. .........................................CONTINUED..................................................
