process
Tesco was able to use an effective recruitment process which is evident to Tesco’s growth of employees
which lead to a positive profit, revenue and market shares. The growth in Tesco's number of employees
has increased from 2019 to 2020. In 2019 Tesco had approximately 420,000 employees worldwide 1 and
in 2020 it has increased to 423,092 employees 2 which means Tesco was able to have an effective
recruitment process which attracted many new candidates with different skills sets which contributed to
Tesco’s growth.
Another reason for Tesco’s growth of employees could be due to the Covid pandemic as businesses
were shut down which lead to loss in jobs. Tesco being an essential company as they provide many
products and services such as food, clothing and sanitation they were able to stay open during the
lockdown which resulted in receiving more customers therefore they required employees in order to be
able to satisfy their customer’s needs. Moreover, as there were more unemployed people, the people
were attracted to be recruited at Tesco as they knew Tesco business would not shut down therefore
giving them stable jobs. After the lockdown Tesco created 16,000 new permanent jobs which led to
exceptional growth in its online business r resulting in a rise from 600,000 at the start of the pandemic
to nearly 1.5 million. As mentioned due to the lockdown Tesco’s
store as well as the online business has led to an increase in sales
from 9% to 16% which were expected to be worth over £5.5bn 3.
This proves Tesco had more sales in 2020 then they had in 2019.
In Tesco’s 2019/2020 financial year, Tesco's annual revenue
amounted to almost £53 billion British pounds in the United
Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. This was an increase of
approximately 1.3 billion pounds compared to the prior financial
year4 which proves they would also have an increase in their
profit making their business successful. Tesco operated almost 6,993 stores around the world in 2019
and increased to 7,005 in 20205 therefore they required more employees.
Moreover, Tesco has the highest market share of 27% in Great Britain throughout 2017 to 2020.
Tesco was successfully able to fill in the gaps due to their
effective recruitment methods which included having a
good job description, job advert, application form and
person specification therefore resulting in them hiring
suitable candidates to meet their customers needs and
increase their revenue making their business successful.
