Case 8:
1) Growth charts (development, standard deviation and percentile, use in
practice)
Growth charts consist of a series of percentile curves that illustrate the distribution of
selected body measurements in children.
- Measures the head circumference of the child, its height, the weight
- Based on the national average
- From 2 years old, it is possible to measure the BMI.
The 50th percentile means that half the children in a country (target population) weight less
or more
From birth to 36 months old, only one common growth chart is used for boys and girls but
after, it is separate because they have different growth patterns and grow at different rates
In the US, it is recommended that pediatricians use the WHO chart for birth to 2 years old
and the CDC chart for older children.
2) Assessment of fine and gross motor development, language, intelligence (van
Wiechen scheme, Groninger Minimum Spreekknormen, IQ tests)
2 types of motor skills: fine (using hands and fingers to control smaller objects) and gross
(coordination of larger muscles in the body to make larger movements)
Van Wiechen scheme:
Used to supervise the development of young children (0-4 years old)
What do you check with this: Motor skills, communication?
