HIST-405N Week 1 Case Study Option 2: Slavery vs. Indentured Servitude ALL CORECT ANSWERS GUARANTEED GRADE A HIGHEST SCORE Case Study: Slavery vs Indentured Servitude Early British Colonies of the 1600s found tobacco growing lucrative but very physically demanding and needed a large workforce. In the West Indies, especially in Barbados, tobacco and eventually sugar cane workers were required. In these two areas and how they came into being we will look at indentured servitude and slavery. Indentured Servitude Slavery developed in the American colonies to facilitate harvesting and exporting profitable agriculture such as rice, tobacco, indigo, and sugarcane. Sugar production was high in demand and very lucrative. However, the arduous labor in sugar fields under the life threating Caribbean heat provided challenges in preserving the labor force from increasing mortality rates. This need to accommodate the agricultural labor for the economic engine of sugar producing regions resulted in the English planters to incorporate slave labor and sanction regulations for governing servitude. (Keene 51) African slaves were first used in the West Indies on the island of Barbados in the mid-1600s after English settlers switched from growing tobacco to sugarcane (Corbett, 2017). Soon after they were also transported to tobacco fields of British America. At first, African servants were given the same rights as the indentured servants (Corbett, 2017). Slave labor eventually was an abundant and economically alternative to indentured servants.
