Clinical trials are the primary method of evaluating the results of a new medical procedure, drug, diet, surgical or behavioral intervention. With clinical trials, researchers are able to determine the safety and efficiency of the new medical treatments, identifying whether the new treatment is more effective and/or less harmful than the standard treatment option. Clinical trials consist of four different testing phases. Phase 1 of the trial consists of experimental testing on a small group of healthy individuals, with the focus being safety. Phase II involves more trials testing, consisting of 100 to 300 individuals, with focus on effectiveness.
