One criticism of the claim sociologists can keep values out of research would be argued by
committed sociologist Myrdal and Gouldner who advocate the approach that is neither
possible nor desirable to keep values out of research. They have a strong preference for
qualitative methods for example participant observation which allows them to support the
values and interests of individuals.
Furthermore, they argue against the positive claim of scientific neutrality for the study of
human beings because of the sociologists own biased views or those of their paymasters is
bound to reflect in their work.
Supported by idea that in 1950s American sociologists had become ‘spiritless technicians’
who became problem takers hiring themselves out to any organisation.
This is because sociologists may wish to further their careers and reputations and allow their
choice of topic and opinion to be influenced if there is a body paying for the research.
For example, feminists value gender equality which overall influences their choice of
qualitative methods such as unstructured interviews to avoid patriarch in interviews.
To conclude, they believe all sociology is influenced by values however not all abide by
ethics and morals, leaving individuals or groups powerless, defeating the purpose of values
a guide.
