Unit 1: Developing effective communication in health and social
care.
P1 Explain the role of effective communication and interpersonal,
interactions in a health and social care content.

Having effective communication and interpersonal relationships with patients allows
caregivers and service users to understand each other on a deeper level. All health care
professionals need to be able to incorporate different type’s communication styles so
they can interact with all their patients in a way that best suits them and makes them
feel comfortable. Caregivers are trained to deal with a variety of different types of issues
such as service users who have anger management problems, hearing problems etc
which makes them equipped for different types of situations. Good communication is
vital when dealing with patients who are often the victim of poor communication skills
because it limits the number of mistakes you can make which ultimately creates a space
for both parties to have mutual respect for one another.

There are two types of communication people can experience,

1. Verbal communication.

2. Nonverbal communication.

1-Verbal communication is the most widely used form of communication it involves the
use of oral language which is used to send messages to others through the use of words.
It can also convey people’s emotions through the tone of their voice. Depending on who
they are talking to people tend to change their language style so that it can best suit the
environment they are in for example if a student is talking to a teacher they would
generally use a formal tone whereas when they are talking to their friends they use
informal language such as slang. If a person has poor hearing, the speaker should adjust
their voice so that the individual is able to understand them.

2- Nonverbal communication is a way to send a message without using any words. It
refers to the use of gestures, facial expressions, body language etc. non-verbal
communication is extremely useful as it makes it possible. it is especially important
when the person has a physical disability that prevents them from hearing you can use
sign language. Facial expressions are a way to convey your emotions and most people
can read facial expressions such as fear, disgust, anger etc. Using this type of

, communication has many benefits as it can be used to tell whether or not someone is
lying or not just by observing their body language.

P2 Discuss the theories of communication

Communication theories help to explain the best ways to converse with a person for
example the Tuckman theory states that in order to form a long-lasting bond with a
group of people you need to follow these steps.

1. Forming

2. Storming

3. Norming

4. Forming

With all these four stages you will be able to understand and explain team development
and behaviour. It also states that communication in groups can be influenced by a
degree in which people feel like they belong together.

The first stage (forming) refers to people meeting for the first time and sharing
information. The second stage (storming) involves tension, struggle and sometimes
arguments about the way the group might function. The third stage (norming) sees the
group coming together and consciously or unconsciously agreeing on their group values.
Once they have established common expectations and values, the group will reach the
fourth stage of being an effectively performing group.
