The AACN Essentials I chose is Essential VII: Clinical Presentation and population Health. This essential focuses on Health promotion, Disease, and injury across the life span are essential for the nurse’s practice (ACCN, p. 23-26). Although nursing practice is mainly to care for the sick patients, there are other ways such as assessing preventive factors that can influence the health of individuals, conducting health history including environmental exposure and family history to identify genetic risks to improve community health. While attending nursing school during my clinical rotation, I always like to talk to my patients about what can be done to prevent more health issues and frequent hospital visits. For example, a patient may have been admitted for abdominal pain but doing the admission questionnaires, patient states that he or she smoke, I take the opportunity to teach the patient what health problems smoking can cause and smoking cessation, tips that can be use to quit the habit.
