This part of the assignment is set to enable us to assess your language grading and concept checking.
You must use direct speech, e.g.'OK everyone, listen very carefully because I'm going to tell you what to do next.
On the wall there are pictures of 12 animals. On these orange cards (hold up a card) are the names of the
animals. I'll give everyone a card with some blu-tack (show back of card with a blob of blu-tack). Take your card
and stick it to the correct animal picture. Juan, what are you going to do with your orange card?'
You might need to put in some predicted student responses for the vocabulary teaching part.
Give word for word the language you could use for:
A) Presenting 3 of your selected vocabulary items which would need to be concept checked,
Show how you would elicit, explain and concept check each of the three items.
“From the vocabulary words you as students identified from the text, we will look at only three vocab
words. You will need to write this down in your vocab book. You need to write down the word, its meaning
and an example in its context. If you are unsure about word, please raise your hand and ask me to repeat
anything. Alright let us begin. The first word is reflect. Everyone repeat after me. Good and once more. Can
anyone identify the stress in the word? (Flect) Excellent. Reflect means to think deeply, think about your
feelings and emotions towards something. It means to identify your own state of awareness. In other
words, you are mirroring your own thoughts and decisions. Look at my face right now, can you see how I am
looking upwards. My hand is placed on my chin.
Does it look like I am thinking? (yes)
Do I look like I am concentrating or focusing hard? (yes).
So, I am thinking about what I did when I was 10 years old and how I felt when I was a kid.
Am I thinking back to my past experiences? (yes)
Am I thinking back to how I felt when I was a kid? (yes)
When I think back on something, in other words I am ……? What is another word for thinking deeply? (to
reflect)
Yes, very good. To reflect means to think deeply about past experiences and to think deeply about your
emotions and feelings.”
“The second word is protests. Everyone repeat after me and again for the second time. Good. Can anyone
identify the stress in the word? (tests) Excellent. Protests refer to a group of people marching or walking to
express anger, disapproval or objection to something. I will repeat it again. Protests can be violent, or they
can be peaceful and calm. As you can see in the picture on the right, the people look angry. The person is
shouting into the megaphone and the people have all got their hands in a fist. However, if you look at the
photo in the middle, you can see it looks more peaceful and energised. Who can tell me the meaning/
definition of protest? Well done. Protests are something you can physically see. Such as in South Africa, the
teachers are payed by the government. When the government did not raise the teacher’s salaries. The
teachers went a protested outside the government building. They protested in anger and protested in large
groups.
Are the teachers in angry or excited? (angry)
Why are they angry? (because the government has not paid their salaries)
Can anyone else think of a word that describes how the teachers are feeling? (irritated, upset, disliked,
annoyed)
Are there lots of teachers in this picture or are there only a few of them? (large group of them)
Are the teachers marching in a large group to show how angry they are? (yes)
