My reflection of the module EUP1501
Topic identified: The digital divide
This module has been insightful, exciting, and rewarding. “Our world today is moved by the
rapid development of information and communications technologies (ICTs)”(Reddi 2011:15).
Technologies, best understood as a means of better communication, improved processing,
and exchange of information, now impact every aspect of our lives, constantly
revolutionizing the way we communicate with each other, comprehend our environments,
and interact with government. Thus, the digital divide is crucial in the development of
communities.
Before taking on this module, I had little to no knowledge of the difficulties many faced in an
attempt to acquire the almost basic need of ICT’s such as good internet access, proper
cellular network reception etc. The bridging of this digital divide requires innovative
solutions tailormade for the specific regions, one of my favourite topics when understanding
the digital divide was when we looked into the scenario of, the NGO in a small southern
African kingdom. Many of us are unaware of how privileged we are being able to take
classes online, receive uninterrupted cell phone coverage, stream movies or music etc. the
small African kingdom scenario made me realize the difficulties in implementing such
technologies in harsh terrains, which are difficult to access, depriving many alike
communities of an almost basic twenty first century need of, being connected to the rest of
the world.
I have since learned how to use Microsoft Excel and its brilliant built-in function of
generating formulas, which as a science student comes in handy, brushed up on my use of
PowerPoint, I now feel confident in my skills of preparing a presentation of good quality and
standard. My writing skills have benefitted greatly too. Furthermore, as a university student,
this module highlighted the dangers of plagiarism and how damaging they are to an
individual, could cost you, your degree, or even livelihood. The issue of plagiarism is
vehemently frowned upon by society, particularly in the academic circles. One needs to
have a modicum of ethical principles towards their fellow human being and respect the
work they’ve done instead of appropriating it as their own.
As a science student and a hopeful mathematician one day, this module EUP1501 has given
me tools I otherwise would not have received in my other modules, from writing skills to
how to engage with fellow peers, and the idea of there being more than one singular
approach, which in the world of science is often not the case, if it’s a question of 1+1, we all
know the answer is 2, and no other alternative is accepted. EUP1501 has been an engaging
