Density Gizmo Lab
Date Class Float or Sink? Gizmo Density Laboratory Part 1 Find the mass, volume, and density for each object 1. Place one shape onto the scale and record the mass in grams. 2. Place one shape into the graduated cylinder and record the volume in mL. 3. Place the shape into the tank of water and record if it floats or sinks. 4. After you are done using all of the shapes, calculate the th 3 density for each to the3 nearest 100 using the formula D = M ÷ V. D = g/cm (1mL = 1 cm). Object Mass (g) Volume (cm3) Float or Sink? Density (g/cm3) 1 red cone 19.5 g 14.0 mL Sink 1 g/cm3 2 light purple egg 11.0 g 9.0 mL Sink 1 g/cm3 3 dark purple egg 4.0 g 5.0 mL Float 1 g/cm3 4 yellow block 135.0 g 7.0 mL Sink 19 g/cm3 5 small green egg 4.0 g 3.5 mL Sink 1 g/cm3 6 blue cube 78.0 g 29.0 mL Sink 3 g/cm3 7 turquoise cone 2.0 g 21.0 mL Float 0 g/cm3 8 grey block 24.0 g 26.0 mL Float 1 g/cm3 9 purple cone 99.0 g 44.0 mL Sink 2 g/cm3 10 red block 42.0 g 61.0 mL Float 1 g/cm3 11 red egg 65.0 g 40.0 mL Sink 2 g/cm3 12 big green egg 104.0 g 140.0 mL Float 1 g/cm3 Crown Mass (g) Volume (cm3) Float or Sink? Look at your data, find all the shapes (numbers 112 & crowns) that floated. 2. Write the number or letter of the shape and it’s density into correct columns. 3. Do the same for all the shapes that sank. 3 4. The density of the water in the pail is 1.0 g/cm. 5. What do you notice about the shapes that float vs those that sink? Name the objects with the largest and smallest masses. How many grams? Did either float? The object with he largest mass is B. 1250.0 g. It sunk. The object with the smallest mass is 7. 2.0 g. It floated. 2. Name the objects with the largest and smallest volumes. How many ml? Did either float? The object with the biggest volume is 12. 140.0 mL. The object floated. The object with the smallest volume is 5. 3.5 mL. It sunk. 3. For all the objects that floated: a. Compare the mass to the volume of each shape, what do you notice? The objects with a larger volume than mass, floated. b. What were the densities of each shape compared to the density of water? As a ratio: 1:1 0:1 Difference -1 1:1 1:1 1:1 4. For all the objects that sank: a. Compare the mass to the volume of each shape, what do you notice? The objects that sunk, had a smaller volume then mass. b. What were the densities of each shape compared to the density of water? As a ratio: 1:1 1:1 19:1 Difference 18 1:1 3:1 Difference 2 2:1 Difference 1 2:1 Difference 1 5:1 Difference 4 19:1 Difference 18 5:1 Difference 4 5. If the density of the liquid in the tank changed to 2.0 g/cm3, which objects would sink to the bottom and why? 4,6,9, A,B,C all sunk because the water density is smaller than the density of the objects. 6. If the density of the liquid in the tank changed to 5.0 g/cm3, which objects would sink to the bottom and why? 4 and B sunk because the water density is smaller than the objects’ density. ..............................................continued................................................................
