Why is it important to study sociolinguistics in International Studies? Relate sociolinguistics to the
four pillars of IS: history, politics, economics, culture (and language).
Variation: there are loads of ways to say something
Idiolect: someone’s personal distinctive way of speaking
Competence: unconscious rules that all speakers (should) know of and apply while speaking
performance: what actually comes out; how speakers showcase the way you speak
communicative competence: you have linguistic knowledge of how to apply competence in a social
fashion (some people know how to speak a language but do not know how to convey that
competence in social situations)
