Structure in writing is extremely important (introduction, main part, conclusion): some people will
only read the conclusion and maybe the introduction but your main part has to be good as well
because a tiny flaw or mistake can harm your credibility

Orientalism
The western world views itself as superior to the rest of the world.
This has been passed off as knowledge for a very long time
Stereotyping is different from orientalism

Why do we have a preconceived notion of what life is like in other cultures?
The oriental lens through which people view the world distorts the reality (stranger danger)
Arab vs Israel war:
Egyptians prove they can fight too even though they’re not considered modern/developed
Unknown cultures are represented unrealistically by people who pass of their view of a certain
phenomenon as factual knowledge
Oriental cultures are all statically and eternally the same
How do we understand/study the others to more efficiently concur and rule them?
To produce knowledge you need power
How is orientalism different from prejudice?
Orientalism is passed off as knowledge whereas stereotypes are not.
Stereotypes are a lack of knowledge and experience.
The West being better than the rest was official academic knowledge.
What is the core content?
Defining us as superior to them and defining them as inferior to us
