Communism
A one-party state, where only the Communist Party is allowed.
The country is meant to be run by elected councils called Soviets,
but as most members of the Soviets are Communists, the country
is run by the Party. Strict limits on many human and civil rights
such as:
-limits on free speech
-travel
-worship etc.
If people would try to break those limits, they would risk
imprisonment. Average living standards were lower than in the
West. Fewer people are either rich or poor with wealth distributed
more evenly. The government would run:
-factories
-farms
-mines
-shops
-media
-etc
With profits being used for the good of public.
Although they aren’t run by the government, newspapers, books,
radio, films TV are strictly censored. Communists believed the
Capitalist system was evil since the rich benefited from the low
wages and poor conditions that the poor had. The Capitalist
system would collapse and be replaced by Communism which was
a superior system.
Capitalism
A democratic state, many parties are allowed to stand in
elections. The leader of the party which wins an election becomes
the head of the government. There are fewer limits on human and
civil rights than in communist places, and some rights are
guaranteed by law (despite this it took until the 1960s to get
rights for many people as many rights were denied to black
Americans). Average living standards higher than in the East.
Wealth distributed very unevenly, so there are more poor people
than in the East, but also many rich.
A free-market economy:
-farms,
-factories,
-mines,
-media
