The Potsdam Conference July 1945 questions
1. Britain, France and the USA freed France, Holland and Denmark in 1945.
2. In 1945, the USSR freed Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria and
East Poland.
3. The USSR and the USA met in Berlin to defeat the Nazis in 1945.
4. The Nazis surrendered on 8th May 1945.
5. The allies met at Potsdam on 17th July 1945.
6. Potsdam was a suburb of Berlin.
7. One of the three major changes since the Yalta Conference was that
Stalin’s armies were occupying most of eastern Europe. The second change
was America’s new president, Truman, who was much more anti-communist
than Roosevelt (who had died). The third change was that the Allies had
tested an atomic bomb, which Truman informed Stalin about during the
Potsdam conference.
8. Stalin was at the conference representing the USSR, Truman was at the
conference representing the USA and Winston Churchill represented Great
Britain until he was voted out by Britain midway through the conference, and
so Clement Attlee represented Great Britain from there forward.
9. Stalin wanted to take huge amounts of power from Germany to ensure
against another attack against the USSR, but Truman didn’t want to repeat
the mistake that they had made with the Treaty of Versailles.
10. Stalin wanted compensation for the 20 million Russians that had died on
the war, as it had a huge impact on the Soviet Union, however once again
Truman didn’t want to repeat the Treaty of Versailles and resisted this.
11. Stalin got the other leaders at the Yalta Conference to agree to allowing
him to set up pro-Soviet governments in Eastern Europe, he said that “if the
Slav people are united, no one will dare move a finger against them.”
Truman became very unhappy and decided to be tougher towards Stalin and
the USSR.
12. It was agreed at the Potsdam conference that:
-Germany would be divided up between the USA, USSR, Britain and France
-The Nazi Party was banned and put to trial as war criminals
-Britain, the USA, USSR and France would collect industrial equipment from
the zone that they ruled, but as the USSR’s zone was mainly agricultural, it
would receive additional reparations from other zones.
-The Western border or Poland would be redrawn along the line created by
the Oder and Neisse rivers.
-Finally, Germans living in Hungary, Poland and Czechoslovakia were to
return to Germany.
13. The clash of personalities was between Stalin and Truman, and it came
down to a very basic point: Stalin was in strong support of Communism and
wanted to turn everything Communist, whereas Truman was very right-wing,
much more than Roosevelt, and wanted everywhere to be Capitalist. Truman
