Course Rationale: (700 – 1000 words)
In order to meet Alberto’s English learning goals I have chosen the multi - syllabus lesson
plan as it will give Alberto different aspects and techniques that will improve his English all
rounds. This syllabus will focus on two of the main skills, being listening and speaking, as
well as activities and topics based on his interests and hobbies which will allow me to
keep him interested and engaged in the lesson and result in effective progress. Alberto is
highly motivated to improve his English as he is seeking employment in an English -
speaking country and would like to improve his English to assist him in a business
environment. In order to do this he needs to know how to communicate with his work
colleagues, there will be different situations that will happen at work and Alberto will
need to know how to express himself and how to respond appropriately and
professionally. Here I will be teaching Alberto some common work phrases and discussing
some situations that happen at work and the correct ways to respond to them. Alberto
also expressed the desire to use English for travelling and so I will also teach him some
common tourist phrases and travel vocabulary. Selecting the right syllabus will help me
achieve the aims and outcomes of the lessons and to have the best experiences for the
learner as Alberto wants also to have a fun exciting lesson with also topics that he enjoys
such as technology, environment and current affairs.
During the listening and speaking lessons I will be able to determine how advanced his
English is and discover Alberto’s strengths and weaknesses, such as his pronunciation, and
I will be able to adjust the rest of the lessons to best suit his needs. This section will also
include adequate preparation for job interviews which Alberto will have to take part in to
find a new job. Alberto had stated before in his interview that he previously had English
lessons and so grammar lessons are not essential as he has had eight years of grammar -
based lessons in Spain through course books. I will ensure to correct any grammatical
errors immediately during the lessons as well as during the feedback stage.
It is evident from the needs analysis questionnaire and interview that Alberto has some
difficulty in listening for gist and listening for key information from the speaker when
being asked questions. He has a lack in confidence when speaking English and responding
to questions and tends to overthink his pronunciation. The aim of this course is to target
his speaking and listening skills and address any issues that present themselves
throughout the course.
Alberto is comfortable with his reading and writing skills, but I have included some
reading and writing tasks in the syllabus to evaluate his reading and writing ability and
adapt the syllabus if more practice is necessary.
