Increased risk of COVID-19 infection in the elderly population in Washington State as

shown in case numbers, hospitalizations and deaths due to knowledge deficit of disease, lack of

preventative measures and comorbidities.

B1. Health Disparity

In the last year during the coronavirus pandemic, it has been made clear that adults 65 and

older are at a much higher risk of becoming very ill, hospitalized, or dying from the COVID19

virus. Largely in part to their higher average comorbidity rate and weakened immune systems,

but also a knowledge deficit of the disease. According to the CDC a person over 65 has a 35x

higher change of being hospitalized and a 1100x chance of death compared to a person aged 5-17

(CDC, 2021). It is well recognized now that those with at least 2 comorbidities, such as heart

disease, asthma, diabetes, or obesity, are at much higher risk of hospitalization or death from

COVID-19. With that said, the CDC estimates over half of all people over 65 have at least two

chronic conditions, putting them at much higher risk of illness or death (Health Policy Data

Requests - Percent of U.S. Adults 55 and Over with Chronic Conditions, 2015).

Being that the average person on the street has limited knowledge on viruses, how they

spread, and how to help prevent them, this creates a possible trigger or rise in cases; particularly

relating to a novel virus such as COVID-19. Although the media, state and local government,

and healthcare professionals have done their part in educating the public, there is still a limit or
