Epithelial tissue forms the outer covering of the body and the inner lining of organs such as the mouth, stomach,
lungs, intestine, and blood vessels. The cells are tightly packed with almost no intercellular space. The lower
surface rests on a basement membrane that separates the epithelium from underlying connective tissue.


Characteristics
• Cells are closely packed.
• Very little intercellular space.
• Supported by a basement membrane.
• May be single layered (simple) or multilayered (stratified).


Types of epithelial tissue
Simple epithelium: squamous, cuboidal, columnar, ciliated, glandular.
Stratified epithelium: stratified squamous, stratified cuboidal, keratinized squamous.
