Core Values, Mission and Vision Statements
It matters not the type of entity we discuss, whether an
organization, business, community or individual, each has a
vision and mission that revolve around it’s own unique set of
core values. The purpose of a mission statement “demonstrates the
foundation for priorities, strategies, plans and work” (David,
David, & David, 2016, p. 19) to be done. The purpose of a mission
statement is envisioned to explain the "what" and "who" of an
entity or individual. The mission statement is a working document
that tells us how we move towards accomplishing our vision and
the attainment of outcomes and goals. As an entity or individual
grows, so to do their objectives and goals. Therefore, the
mission statement periodically must be rewritten in order to
reflect changes in the culture and how the goals of the
individual or entity are met. These changes from time to time are
dependent on variables that expedite or hinder progress towards
reaching the vision. However, mission statements explain your
individual or entity’s core foundation, so change should be kept
to a minimum.
An individual’s personal mission statement allows
clarification of their own core values and beliefs and, based on
those values and beliefs will drive the actions identified that
will lead to the attainment of the vision.
