Macromolecules are large complex molecule composed of small subinits. Examples of macromolecules
are carbohydrates (polysaccharides), lipids, nucleic acides, and proteins.

A macromolecule is classified as a complex molecule that is composed from smaller subunits.

Wrong answer

Question 4
pts
What are the four main types of macromolecules?
Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, and Nucleic Acids

Proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and carbohydrates

Question 5
pts
What various functions do proteins have in a cell?
Your Answer:

Proteins have several functions in a cell. First, proteins facilitate movement of materials in and out of the
cell. Also, proteins can act as an enzyme that catalyzes biochemical processes. Some proteins play a
structural role in the cell. Lastly, some proteins assist with enabling movement for example filaments.

Proteins may facilitate the movement of materials in or out of a cell. Some can act as enzymes that
catalyze, or speed up, biochemical processes. Others play a structural role while other proteins, such as
filaments, enable movement.

Question 6
pts
What are the two major types of nucleic acids and their roles?
Your Answer:

There are 2 major ty[es of nucleic acids. There is DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic
acid). DNA is located in the nucleus of the cell. DNA's primary role in the cell is to store hereditary
information and responsible for the inheritable characteristics of all living organisms. RNA is also located
in the nucleus, but travels in and out of the nucleus. RNA primary responsiblity is to decipher the
hereditary information from DNA and use this information to synthesize proteins.

There are two major types of nucleic acids: DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid).
Nucleic acids are chemical molecules that carry genetic information within the cell. DNA contains a vast

amount of hereditary information and is responsible for the inheritable characteristics of living organisms.
RNA is responsible for deciphering the hereditary information in DNA and using it to synthesize proteins.

Question 7
pts
What is the plasma membrane, and what is it made up of?
Your Answer:

The plasma membrane is the outer portion of the cell which serves to protect the cells cytoplasmic space
from outside elements. It is composed of a lipid bilayer made up of phospolipids. It is semipermeable
which means that it has the ability to allow certain molecules to pass through. Therefore, the plasma
membrane restricts movement of materials such as water, nutrients, etc. These phospholipids are
described to have polar hydrophilic heads and non-polar hydrophobic tails.

The plasma membrane serves the cell as a surrounding barrier that separates the inside of the cell from
the outside surrounding environment. The plasma membrane also restricts the movement of materials
(water, nutrients, etc) either in or out of the cell, thus allowing a cells to absorb and keep what is needed
(influx) while also preventing the escape (out flux) of essential nutrients. The plasma membrane is
composed of lipids (hydrophobic hydrocarbons).

Question 8
pts
What are the three main components of carbohydrates?
Your Answer:

The 3 main components of any carbohydrate is carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen in varying amounts of
each one. The most infamous carbohydrate is glucose C6H12O6.

Carbohydrates are composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Examples would include,
C6H12O6 (glucose) C12H22O11 (sucrose) and C6H10O5 (cellulose).

Question 9
pts
What is the primary difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells?
Your Answer:

The primary difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells is the presence of a nucleus.
Eukaryotic cells contain a nucleus which is enclosed in the cell to store genetic material. Prokaryotic
cells lack a nucleus and typically fall into classification as either bacteria or archaea.
