Materials Testing Lab CET 345 Experiment 4 Compression and Flexure Test of Concrete Pearson Doss
Materials Testing Lab CET 345 Experiment 4 Compression and Flexure Test of Concrete Pearson Doss Group 2 Summary Concrete has been applied in construction for many years. The compressible strength of concrete allows it to be used for base slabs and can handle large loads built atop it. Although concrete can withstand a large force compressing it, it does not take as much flexing force to malfunction. This is why some will find that concrete has been reinforced with steel rebar or some type of mesh material when poured. In this experiment the object is to properly mix a slab of concrete and allow it time to harden. Then this cylinder should be tested using a compression test machine. Once the cylinder of concrete is correctly placed the test can begin by applying a force to the center of the specimen. After this test is conducted the same machine will be used to apply a force to a slab on the same mix of concrete. The force will be placed in the middle of the slab so that the flexure test can be conducted. When the data is collected the compressive strength of the test material can be determined. Following this data the ultimate and calculated moment can be determined. Following this experiment a better understanding of how concrete may fail and what its limitations are will be outlined. ..........................................continued..............................................
