questions

Why do we study sociology of organisations?
Work is most important in peoples life (look at the time per day)

Why sociology?
Understanding behaviour in context
What other people and the organisation doing around one employer
Different perspectives

What are the other people doing and how does this influence the employee?

,6 strands

Each strand look at different aspects of organisations

Methodological pluralism = using different strands at the same time
How you look to the world, influences what you see. We put on different glasses when
watching organisations and the society as whole.

Psychology – focusses on the individual
Sociology – focusses on social processes around the individual

The first few strands will be more on the left

We use the Coleman boat too understand how macro-level situations are related to each
other.

,1 Managerial-psychologistic strand (left strand, psychology)

Scientific management

Efficiency was the goal in this time. The best way to work more efficient is to specialise and
decompose tasks → Het is makkelijker voor 5 mensen om samen 5 tafels te maken dan
ieder apart

In this, we have ‘Do-ers’ and ‘Thinkers’ (managers). The manager tell what to do and the
do-ers do it

People like to don’t think about everything. The managers tell the employers what to do and
we get paid for that. We think it’s pleasant when others tell us what to do.

If we can earn more money in a working day, we will work harder for it.

Managers proberen alles beter te begrijpen. Ze analyseren het werk heel erg. Bijvoorbeeld
met de klok meten van taken en kijken hoelang ze er over deden. Ze stelde de vraag: ‘’Wat
is de beste manier om mensen zo efficiënt mogelijk te laten werken?’’.

, Scientific management
Measure things to understand society better

Factory work, with a lot of process working
Decompose the work in different parts
A lot of people

In many places of the world, this way of working still exists

Zoveel mogelijk in een korte tijd produceren.
