1.1 Principles of Cellular Organization
The cell represents the fundamental structural and functional unit of all living organisms. Cell theory, formulated by Matthias
Schleiden, Theodor Schwann, and Rudolf Virchow, establishes three core tenets: all living organisms are composed of one or
more cells, the cell is the basic unit of structure and organization in organisms, and all cells arise from pre-existing cells
through cell division.
Organisms are broadly categorized into two structural domains based on their internal compartmentalization: Prokaryotes
(Bacteria and Archaea) and Eukaryotes (Protists, Fungi, Plants, and Animals).

1.2 The Eukaryotic Endomembrane System
The endomembrane system consists of a group of membranes and organelles in eukaryotic cells that work together to modify,
package, and transport lipids and proteins. It includes the nuclear envelope, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus,
lysosomes, vesicles, and the plasma membrane.
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
The endoplasmic reticulum is an extensive network of folded membranes continuous with the outer nuclear membrane. It
exists in two distinct functional regions:
• Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER): Studded with ribosomes on its outer surface. Primary site for synthesis, folding,
and post-translational modification of membrane-bound and secreted proteins.
