Classification of Five Variables
, 2
The five variables selected for this descriptive analysis represent the four levels of
measurement and provide the Board of Trustees with comprehensive insights into the university
community. The first variable, Gender Identity, is a nominal variable that categorizes respondents
into distinct groups (man, woman, transgender, non-binary/non-conforming, or prefer not to
disclose) without any inherent order. The second variable, SleepyAtWork (likelihood of feeling
sleepy or falling asleep at work or in class), is an ordinal variable measured on a 5-point Likert
scale (Very unlikely, Unlikely, As likely as unlikely, Likely, Very likely) that reflects ranked
responses but does not assume equal intervals between categories. The third variable, Age (in
years), is an interval/ratio variable that provides continuous numerical data about respondent
ages with a true zero point and equal intervals between values. The fourth variable, BMI (Body
Mass Index), is an interval/ratio variable representing a continuous measure of body composition
with meaningful intervals and ratios. The fifth variable, FoodEmotions (agreement with "I use
food to cope with emotions"), is an ordinal variable measured on a 5-point Likert scale (Strongly
disagree, Disagree, Neutral, Agree, Strongly Agree) that assesses stress-coping behaviors related
to emotional eating.
