WEEK 6 STUDY GUIDE

Message to Lumist AP Learners

Hi AP Campers! Welcome to week 6 of the AP Chemistry Study Camp. This week’s
unit is thermodynamics, which covers about 7-9% of the final exam.

We will begin with a refresher of some topics we learned last week. Particularly,
energy diagrams, exothermic, and endothermic reactions. This unit deals with energy
transfer between two different compounds or “systems.” One interesting fact we will
explore is the first law of thermodynamics. According to this law, energy throughout
the universe is constant throughout time. However, what we experience when we cook
food or go outside in the winter is transfer of heat/energy. This unit applies this same
concept to chemical reactions.

This guide includes tips to help you avoid common misunderstandings and remember
key concepts. The end of this guide has a problem set with questions you can expect on
the exam. There is also a bonus question for students who want extra practice and a bit
of a challenge.

Good luck!

Chapter 1 Overview: Topics & Concepts
Thermodynamics

1. Endothermic & Exothermic Processes

Learning Objective 1: understand the relationship between temperature and the
energy in a system
Learning Objective 2: understand energy changes in chemical and physical processes
Definitions: temperature, exothermic, and endothermic

● Temperature is the average kinetic energy of a substance
● Changes in temperature indicate energy changes
● Two types of energy changes in chemicals reactions/phase changes
