STUDY GUIDE 2026/2027
H & H - ANS ✔✔-hematocrit: 38-50%
-hemoglobin: 12-18
-will change together if one goes up so does the other one
*by giving one unit of PRBC's hemoglobin level will go up by one
Isotonic Solution - ANS ✔✔same solute as blood (NS and LR)
-used to replace fluid in a dehydrated person
Hypotonic Solution - ANS ✔✔-lower solute than the blood
-water flows into the blood cells
-1/2 NS
Hypertonic Solution - ANS ✔✔-higher solute than in the blood
-water flows out of the blood cells
-D5W
Aldosterone - ANS ✔✔-conserves sodium and therefore water
-can help control blood pressure by holding onto fluids or getting rid of them
ADH - ANS ✔✔-antidiuretic hormone
-controls how much urine your kidneys produce
-more ADH means less urine, the body is holding onto fluids
, Platelet - ANS ✔✔-150,000-400,000
WBC's - ANS ✔✔-4,000-11,000
Potassium - ANS ✔✔-3.5-5.0
-primary intracellular fluid
-works with muscles, especially cardiac rate and rhythm
-anything out of the normal is a critical value and doc must be contacted
Calcium - ANS ✔✔-8.6-10.2
Sodium - ANS ✔✔-135-145
-primary extracellular fluid
-deals with the neuromuscluar system
Blood Transfusion - ANS ✔✔-consent from patient
-vitals
-cross match with another nurse
-must be started within 30 minutes of blood getting to the floor
-infusion must be completed within 4 hours of blood getting to the floor
-start slow and can increase
-need y tubing and NS only
Hyperkalemia - ANS ✔✔-high potassium
-Causes
*addison's disease causes decreased aldosterone which leads to NA depletion and K retention
