, 1. INTRODUCTION

Kidnapping has emerged as a significant and multifaceted criminal phenomenon in
contemporary South Africa, reflecting a complex interplay of cultural practices,
socioeconomic pressures, and organised criminal activity. Van Heerden (2017:1) notes
that kidnapping is a diverse and evolving phenomenon that is especially prevalent in
Third World countries with high levels of crime, where countries are generally poorly
resourced and have inadequately trained police personnel, corrupt public officials,
ineffective intelligence services, a weak judiciary, and a history of political or social
instability and conflict. South Africa, with its high crime rates and socioeconomic
inequalities, has become a fertile ground for various forms of kidnapping that extend
beyond the conventional understanding of ransom-driven abductions (Barkhuizen,
2021:95).

The nature and extent of kidnapping in South Africa have shown a troubling upward
trajectory since the advent of democracy in 1994. Post-1994 kidnappings in South
Africa demonstrated a steady increase from 459 reported cases in 1994 to 4 131 in
2000, with a significant increase to 4 772 incidents recorded during the 2014/2015
annual period (Barkhuizen, 2021:99). However, these statistics must be approached
with caution, as the Crime Administration System (CAS) crime code 52205, "man-
stealing," does not distinguish between different types of kidnappings, lumping all
incidents together without differentiation (Barkhuizen, 2021:99). More importantly,
experts estimate that approximately 80 per cent of global kidnapping crimes go
unreported, suggesting that the true scale of the problem is considerably larger than
official statistics indicate (Van Heerden, 2017:45).

This assignment aims to explore and discuss five distinct types of kidnapping prevalent
in South Africa, namely bridal kidnappings (Ukuthwala), initiation kidnappings, basic
kidnappings, virtual kidnappings, and express kidnappings. The discussion will examine
