Complete PCU Externship Interview Preparation Guide
HCA Healthcare — PCU Externship Interview
Clearwater/Tampa Area | LPN Experience | RN Bridge Student | Future CRNA

You are already in a strong position for this interview. You have bedside nursing experience
as an LPN, you are actively in an RN bridge program, and you have long-term goals in
critical care and anesthesia. This combination makes you look motivated, goal-oriented, and
serious about growing in acute care nursing.

What a PCU Externship Usually Means
PCU stands for Progressive Care Unit.

PCU is a step below ICU and above med-surg. Patients are higher acuity and often require
closer monitoring.

Common patient populations include:
• Cardiac patients
• Respiratory patients
• Sepsis patients
• Post-operative complications
• Telemetry monitoring patients
• Unstable medical patients

For someone pursuing CRNA, PCU is an excellent stepping stone because the common
pathway is:
RN → PCU/Stepdown → ICU → CCRN → CRNA

How to Professionally Discuss Your CRNA Goal
A strong way to discuss your future goals during the interview is:

“My long-term goal is critical care nursing and eventually becoming a CRNA. I wanted to
start building a strong acute care foundation early, and I felt PCU would expose me to
higher-acuity patients while I continue developing my skills.”

Most Likely Interview Questions + Strong Answers
1. Tell me about yourself

Suggested Answer:
“I’m currently an LPN with about a year of experience while completing my RN bridge
program at Galen. Working as an LPN has helped me build confidence with patient care,
communication, and time management. I’m now looking to expand my acute care
experience, especially in a higher-acuity environment like PCU. Long term, I’m interested in

, critical care nursing and eventually pursuing CRNA school.”

2. Why do you want to work in PCU?

Suggested Answer:
“I want exposure to more complex patients and stronger clinical experience. I enjoy learning
and challenging myself, and I think PCU will help me strengthen my assessment skills,
prioritization, and ability to recognize changes in patient conditions.”

3. How do you handle stress?

Suggested Answer:
“I stay organized, prioritize tasks, and communicate early when I need help. I’ve learned
that staying calm and focused helps patients feel safer too. I also understand that teamwork
is essential in high-acuity environments.”

4. Describe a difficult patient situation

Use the STAR Method:
• Situation
• Task
• Action
• Result

Choose a professional example that shows communication, problem-solving, or patient
advocacy.

Why HCA?
Important things to know about HCA Healthcare:
• One of the largest healthcare systems in the United States
• Strong nurse education and training programs
• Internal career growth opportunities
• Nurse residency support
• Tuition assistance opportunities
• Large acute care exposure

Suggested Answer:
“I’ve heard HCA offers strong learning opportunities for nurses and students. Since I’m
continuing my RN education and interested in advancing into critical care, I wanted to be in
a hospital system where I can continue growing long term.”
