Major Depressive Disorder A disorder in which a person experiences, in the absence of drug use
or a medical condition, 2 or more weeks with five or more symptoms,
at least one of which must be either (1) depressed mood or (2) loss of
interest or pleasure.
People with major depressive disorder experience hopelessness and
lethargy lasting several weeks or months. Depression is the number-
one reason people seek mental health services. 1 in 10 U.S Adults.
COVID-19 pandemic caused depression levels to rise. 1 in 5 health care
professionals. Potential seasonal pattern.
The DSM-5 classifies major depressive disorder as the presence of at
least five of the following symptoms over a 2-week period of time:
-Depressed mood most of the time
-Dramatically reduced interest or enjoyment in most activities most of
the time
-Significant challenges regulating appetite and weight
-Significant challenges regulating sleep
-Physical agitation or lethargy
-Feeling listless or with much less energy
