Emotional Intelligence
Intelligence is the ability to think, learn, and adapt. It has an impact on many
behaviors, including business and personal relationships. There are many different
types of intelligence and ways to measure intelligence. One type of intelligence is
EI. People with high EI are better able to regulate their behaviors and emotions and
are therefore more successful in their personal and business relationships.1

EI is defined as the ability to understand and manage emotions in oneself and in others.2 It
can also be defined as how people understand each other by becoming aware of their own
and others’ emotions.3

What does it take to be emotionally intelligent? There are several building blocks that make
up EI. Some of the major building blocks include the following:

1. Self-awareness is the ability to accurately perceive, assess, and exhibit
appropriate emotions.
