ICA1501 ASSIGNMENT 4 2026
DUE 15 JULY 2026
Question 1
1.1 Designing a Cross-Disciplinary Creative Arts Project
Climate change is a very big problem that affects our world today, and it is important
that we teach our children about it in a way that they can truly understand and care
about deeply. One of the best ways to do this is through the arts because art helps us to
feel things and to share our feelings with others in a way that words alone sometimes
cannot. For this project, I will combine Visual Arts and Drama to help Grade 4 learners
explore climate change and the environment in a fun and meaningful way that will stay
with them for a long time.
The project is called "Our Earth, Our Story: A Creative Response to Climate
Change," and in this project, learners will work together to create art and drama that
tells the important story of our planet. They will start by learning about environmental
problems in their own community, like littering on the streets, wasting water at home, or
throwing away too much rubbish. Then they will think about bigger problems like global
, warming and how it affects animals and plants all over the world. The teacher will guide
them and help them to come up with their own ideas, and the teacher will also
encourage them to think creatively and to share their thoughts with the group. At the
end, the learners will put on a special exhibition for the school and the community where
they live. This exhibition will show their artwork and they will also perform short plays
that tell stories about the environment and what we can do to help. The main question
we will ask throughout the project is: "How can we use our voices and our hands to tell
the story of our changing planet and inspire hope for its future?"
The project has several important learning goals that we want learners to achieve. First,
learners will learn about the causes and effects of climate change and how it affects
their own area and the people who live there (Department of Basic Education, 2012, p.
12). Second, they will learn how to express their feelings and ideas about these issues
through painting, drawing, and acting, which helps them to communicate in different
ways. Third, they will learn how to work together in groups to plan and create a project,
which teaches them important skills like listening to others and sharing responsibilities.
Finally, and most importantly, they will learn what they can do to help the environment in
their everyday lives. These goals are all part of what the CAPS curriculum expects
learners to learn in Creative Arts, and they help to develop the whole child (Odendaal &
de Jager, 2017, p. 23).
This project links directly to the goals of the CAPS curriculum for Creative Arts because
CAPS wants to "develop creative, expressive and innovative individuals and teams"
(Odendaal & de Jager, 2017, p. 23). This project does exactly that by giving learners the
freedom to express themselves and come up with new ideas. It also helps learners to
develop an "awareness of arts across diverse cultures" because by thinking about the
environment, learners can explore how different people and cultures care for the earth
in different ways. The project also helps learners to develop important life skills, like
problem-solving and working with others, which are essential for their future
(Department of Basic Education, 2012, p. 12). In short, the project teaches learners to
be creative, to be responsible citizens, and to care about the world around them.
