a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching:
Using authentic materials in foreign language teaching is a very useful way for introducing real
language, incorporating culture and increasing knowledge. Authentic materials give students the
perception of how language is authentically and purposefully used in the real world. Authentic
materials are effective in the way in which they advise on current affairs in real life, making it
relatable for students because of what is familiar to them and their own experiences.
It creates knowledge of language and proficiencies associated with language. The use of such
materials is mutually beneficial as both the students' and teachers' interest in the language being
taught, is engaged. Greater knowledge of a subject is created by subjecting students to cultural
elements in a text, resulting in more interest in the text.
A student’s skills to identity important facts in texts are developed as well the knowledge of how to
disregard irrelevant information. Unlike materials which were intended particularly for teaching
purposes, authentic materials are regarded as the best way of teaching the actual use of English for
communication.
