A counselor who works with adults with anxiety disorders wants to know whether there
is a relationship between scores on the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS-A) and the
Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). He intends to study this by giving all new clients the two
measures at intake and looking at their scores on the two measures. He will use the
standard alpha value of .05. Based on this scenario, answer the following questions.
1. Does this question represent a correlational or experimental research design? Why?
ANSWER: (4 pts)This question represents a correlation research design. It is a
correlation research design because the counselor is not manipulating any variables but
instead is observing and measuring the relationship between two existing variables which
are the scores on HARS-A and BAI.

alternative model and the null model. Which of these two would state that there is no
relationship between scores on the HARS-A and the BAI?
ANSWER: (4 pts) The null model/hypothesis would state that there is no relationship
between the scores of the HARS-A and the BAI.
3. State the alternative hypothesis for this study.
ANSWER: (4 pts) “There is a significant relationship between scores on the HARS-A
and the BAI.”

ANSWER: (4 pts) “There is no significant relationship between scores on the HARS-A
and the BAI.”
5. Are your hypotheses directional or non-directional? How do you know this?
ANSWER: (4 pts) My hypotheses is non-directional. This is because they do not specify
the direction of the relationship between the HARS-A and the BAI scores, which means
they do not state whether the relationship is positive or negative.
6. Suppose you run the study, and the results come out with a p value of .12. What can
you conclude about the relationship between the scores on these two measures?
ANSWER: (5 pts) A p value of .12 is greater than the standard alpha value of 0.05. Due
to this, the observed data is likely under the null hypothesis, making the evidence not
sufficient enough to conclude that a significant relationship to existed between the scores
