Speech 101 Written Final Exam Please read the following speech about Puppy Mills that was written and delivered in 2007. Answer the below questions on a piece of paper to turn in on Friday or create a Word document to email to me. Each paragraph is numbered so you can easily reference the paragraph you want by listing its number. Note the point value given after each question. Answers need not be lengthy, just in proper form given the question. 1. What do you think is the specific purpose of this speech? Be sure to put the specific purpose in proper format by referencing your book. (5 points) 2. What are the main points of this speech? Please answer this question with complete sentences. (5) 3. What organizational pattern is utilized in the body of this speech? Be sure that you are stating a pattern that was discussed in class and/or in the textbook. (5) 4. Does this speech deal with a question of fact, value or policy? (5) How do you know? (5) 5. Is the speaker trying to get the listeners to change their way of thinking (thoughts)or way of behavior (actions)? (5) Reference a statement from this speech that proves your choice. (5) ex: “In paragraph 5, sentence 2, she states…” 6. Which paragraphs make up the introduction, body, and conclusion? (5) Please reference the paragraph numbers, i.e., “The introduction consists of paragraphs 1-2, the body consists of paragraphs 3-20, and the conclusion consists of paragraphs 21-25” (obviously this is just an example and not the correct answer[Symbol]) 7. Please list the key elements of a good public speaking introduction. (5) Then indicate if and how this introduction fulfilled each of these functions. (5) 8. Pretend you were a classmate of this speaker in the 2007 and you were asked to be her debate partner on this topic. What is one piece of evidence you could point out that was not effective? (5) Which Test of Evidence (from BlackBoard handout on debate) does it fail? (5) 9. In that same debate against the writer of this speech, you need to point out a Fallacy (debate handout again and textbook) that she commits in her case. (5) Then explain why this particular fallacy she commits is a flaw in her logic. (5) 10. The final question is to rewrite the introduction of this speech for a present-day audience at Rio Hondo College in Whittier, California. Assume that you are yourself giving this speech so you will not discuss your experience at the Human Society (unless you have experience there). You cannot use the writer’s “imagine this” scenario. You need a new “angle” on this topic in order to write this introduction. Lastly, you need to come up with your own main points to prove this argument. Be sure that your new introduction fulfills all of the requirements of a good introduction as you learned in class. Be creative and logical. (30) Speech on Puppy Mills 1. Imagine this: A little girl and her mother leave Target with several shopping bags. The girl is very bored after spending hours watching her mother shop for grown up things and being told she couldn’t have this or that. But then, the she sees the shop next to Target, and her eyes light up. Ok, so it’s not a candy store or a Build-a-Bear Workshop. But it’s the next best thing that’s right: a pet store. And today, they have a litter of Golden Retriever puppies displayed in the window. Instantly the girl’s boredom vanishes, and she begs her mom to go inside the store. Once inside, one of the energetic puppies jumps up against the glass walls and looks up at them with such innocent, sweet eyes. The mother and daughter fall in love with him immediately. And soon, they walk out of the store with another purchase. Actually, this isn’t very hard to imagine. In fact, this is an all-too- common occurrence. ...........................................continued....................................................................
