ASSIGNMENT 2
DUE DATE: JULY 2026
, ECS4867 ASSIGNMENT 2 2026
1. Introduction
Development Economics emphasises that true progress must reach all parts of society,
including rural populations. In many developing countries, the majority of people still live
in rural areas and depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. Rural development is
therefore not optional but essential. It involves more than increasing crop production – it
includes social, economic, and infrastructural improvements that raise living standards
and reduce poverty (Szirmai, 2015, Chapter 10; ECS4867 Study Guide, Unit 3B, p. 50).
Rural development is important for reducing poverty, creating jobs, and improving the
quality of life in rural communities. Good policies can help rural areas grow and
contribute to a country's economy. My assignment discusses the key policies needed
for rural development and explains why rural development is both a major challenge
and an important part of South Africa's socio-economic development. The discussion is
based on Szirmai (2015) and the UNISA ECS4867 Study Guide.
