QUESTION 1: INTRODUCTION
A literature review is a systematic and critical examination of existing scholarly
knowledge related to a specific research topic. Creswell and Creswell (2018) define a
literature review as a written summary of journal articles, books and other documents
that describe the current state of knowledge about a topic. Similarly, Kumar (2019)
explains that a literature review involves identifying, evaluating and synthesising
published information relevant to a particular research problem. Maree (2020) further
states that a literature review critically analyses previous studies to identify patterns,
theories and gaps that may guide future research. Therefore, a literature review serves
as an important academic process through which researchers establish a foundation for
their investigations.
