I selected to observe video #28 entitled Using UNO Cards to Engage

in Fitness Activities for the Elementary School observation. The

observation video begins with a group of 16 first-graders aged 6 and 7

years old as they performed various cognitive and physical activities. For

the duration of the video the teacher is utilizing the teacher-directed

instruction method, the teacher provides the students with directions on

how to perform the mental and physical activities. Overall the school

appears to have a good socioeconomic status, the video displayed a decent

size gym, along with new gym equipment and a variety of gym exercises.

While all the students seem to display strong cognitive development skills,

they still require both verbal instructions and physical examples. During

this stage the students would be in Piaget's

Preoperational stages of development. Furthermore, the classroom

consisted of 8 boys and 8 girls therefore their growth-physical development

would be different from one another. All the students displayed a personal

interest in performing the activities and seemed to enjoy doing the task at

hand. Additionally, the students seemed to display strong vocabulary

skills, along with a strong ability to collaborate with other students.

The second learning method the teacher utilizes in this

demonstration is the inquiry based learning theory. She does this by posing

a series of questions to inquire and observe the students’ ability to

understand the concept of the assignment. Consequently, the students are

demonstrating Piaget’s concrete operational stage of cognitive

development. In this assignment the students engage in logical thinking as

the teacher gives them concrete instructions and examples on how to

perform the task. Take as an example, when the teacher asks the students

to verify the different card colors, she provides them with concrete

examples by demonstrating the different gym areas the students should go

to when they select the corresponding color. Through this action the

teacher would be able to assess the students’ motor skills and cognitive

development by identifying the prior knowledge the student retained in
