Client and Caregiver Interview

2 minutes 58 seconds
To plan for our therapy session, please tell me a little about
yourselves.

My name is Sherl, and I'm Dan's wife of almost 47 years. And I'm
his companion and his caregiver also. Dan was a teacher in public
school for 28 years, along with being a teacher in a college for 18
years. Some of that was concurrent. Dan: Yeah. Spouse: And after
that he worked at other jobs. When he retired, he worked at the
farmer's market for some of the vendors and had fun doing that
right? Dan: Yeah. Spouse: And he worked in a bakery. Dan: Yeah.
Spouse: Yes, and I think that's about all you did, that was enough.

, Dan's a Master Gardener. And he loves getting his hands in the
soil, which he's been doing lately. Dan Yeah, [unintelligible].

Tell me about the story of your stroke.

Dan had his first stroke... It was right after my father had passed
away, right after we had to put my mother in the hospital. And
then ten days later, Dan had a stroke. It was after several mini-
strokes. His stroke wasn't detected right away. He ended up in the
hospital, but they didn't know what was wrong until nine days
later. Because Dan has a pacemaker, they couldn't do MRIs, so
they did CT scans and it, the stroke, didn't show up. So he was
treated in the hospital. He was in ICU for sixteen days and then he
was in therapy for about thirty days. But his first stroke, he
recovered quite well. Recovered his speech, recovered his
memory, and pretty much went back to work for a while. But then
in... Ten days after our son's wedding, and he was best man at our
son's wedding, but ten days after, he had this stroke. He had his
second stroke, and then shortly after, he had a brain bleed also.
But I came home from work that day and found him sitting at the
table, the dog right at his feet. And we put together some of the
pieces, I found groceries in the car. This was, I found him shortly
after five o'clock. But I found groceries in the car, and the slip was
from about 10:30 so. From what we can put together, is that he got
into the house and sat down and stayed there until I came home
about 5:30 or so. And I knew right away something was wrong. You
know, he was smiling when he greeted me, but he didn't say a
word, he didn't say anything. So I called the ambulance, and they
took him to the hospital. I knew right away what was wrong, I knew
that he had had another stroke. And then he was treated in the
hospital for, he was there for thirty-one days and then transferred
to a rehab facility with occupational therapy, physical therapy, and
speech therapy. And he's pretty much been in therapy since then.
We go pretty much wherever we can to get him therapy to
continue. And his progress is continuing, even after what, four
years.
