Some of the questions require you to think critically, in applying your knowledge about a theory. It is a valuable exercise to test your own capabilities first, before seeking answers elsewhere. Thabo is a 10-year-old Grade 5 learner who recently moved from a rural area to a city school. Since the move, his teacher has observed several challenges. Thabo struggles to complete tasks independently and often waits for help from the teacher. He appears withdrawn and does not actively participate in group activities. Thabo lives with his grandmother, as his parents passed away a few years ago. At school, he finds it difficult to make friends and is often teased because he speaks a different home language. He sometimes comes to school without lunch and looks tired. His teacher notices that he becomes anxious when separated from his grandmother and seeks reassurance from adults at school. The teacher wants to support Thabo’s academic progress and emotional wellbeing using appropriate learning and developmental theories. 1.1 Scaffolding (Vygotsky) (8 marks) 1.1.1 Explain what is meant by scaffolding and the zone of proximal development (ZPD). 1.1.2 Using the case study, describe two ways the teacher can scaffold Thabo’s learning. 1.2 Psychosocial Development (Erikson) (6 marks) 1.2.1 Identify the relevant psychosocial stage for Thabo’s age. 1.2.2 Describe the main conflict in this stage. ASSIGNMENT 2 2026

UNIQUE NO. 754562
DUE DATE: 23 JUNE 2026

, Introduction to Personal and Social Wellbeing - IPS1501

QUESTION 1: CASE STUDY [40 MARKS]

1.1 Scaffolding (Vygotsky) (8 marks)

1.1.1 Explain what is meant by scaffolding and the zone of proximal development (ZPD).
(4)

Scaffolding refers to the temporary support provided by a teacher or more knowledgeable person
to help a learner complete tasks that they cannot yet perform independently. As the learner gains
competence, the support is gradually withdrawn.

The Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) is the gap between what a learner can do
independently and what the learner can achieve with guidance and support from a teacher or
more capable peers.

1.1.2 Using the case study, describe two ways the teacher can scaffold Thabo’s learning. (4)

1. The teacher can break difficult tasks into smaller steps and provide clear instructions and
examples to help Thabo complete activities successfully.
2. The teacher can pair Thabo with supportive classmates during group work so that he can
learn from peers and gradually develop confidence and independence.

1.2 Psychosocial Development (Erikson) (6 marks)

1.2.1 Identify the relevant psychosocial stage for Thabo’s age. (2)

Thabo is in the Industry versus Inferiority stage, which typically occurs between the ages of 6
and 12 years.
