LEARNING OUTCOMES After completing this assignment, you should be able to: • Analyse your own cognitive processes and learning strategies. • Apply theories of cognitive development and learning. • Demonstrate understanding of how learning occurs. • Reflect on how developmental and contextual factors influence learning. • Propose strategies to improve your learning. You are expected to refer to the following Learning Units when planning your submission: Learning Unit 1: Learning • Levels of learning (Bloom’s taxonomy) • Conditions of learning (cognitive, affective, psychomotor) Learning Unit 2: Development and influencing factors • Brain development and influencing factors (e.g. stress, sleep, environment) • Psychological and contextual influences on adolescent Learning Unit 3: Cognitive development (MAIN FOCUS) • Piaget’s theory • Information-processing theory • Multiple intelligences (Gardner) • Triarchic theory (Sternberg) • Sociocultural theory (Vygotsky) PED3701/ASSIGNMENT 3/2026 3 ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS Task format: Video recording You are required to submit a video recording (4–6 minutes) in which you analyse how you think and learn as an Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) student. Your video must include the following components: 1. ANALYSIS OF YOUR LEARNING AND THINKING (±1–2 MINUTES) Describe how you currently process learning in this module. You must explain how your mind works when you study, not just what you do. Refer to “Levels of learning” in Learning Unit 1. Consider: • Do you mainly memorise, understand, apply or analyse? • What cognitive challenges do you experience? Focus on how you think and learn, not only your experiences. Guiding Questions: - “When I study, do I mainly memorise or do I really understand the work?” - “Can I apply what I learn to new situations?” - “Do I struggle to analyse or think critically?” - “What is difficult for me when I try to learn?” Sentence starters: - “When I study, I mostly learn by…” - “I think I operate mainly at the level of ….” - “I find it difficult to …” - “This shows that my learning is mostly …” 2. APPLICATION OF ONE COGNITIVE THEORY (LEARNING UNIT 3) (±2 MINUTES) Select ONE theory from Learning Unit 3: • Piaget • Information-processing 4 • Gardner • Sternberg • Vygotsky You must: • Explain the theory clearly in your own words. o What is the main idea of the theory? o What are the key concepts of the theory? • Apply it to your own learning in an ODeL context. Show how it explains YOUR learning. o How does this theory explain your learning? o Give a real example from your ODeL Experience? 3. STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE YOUR LEARNING (±1–2 MINUTES) Using Learning principles (Learning Unit 1) and your chosen theory (Learning Unit 3), propose 2–3 strategies to improve your learning. Your strategies must be: • Practical and clearly explained (“What can I do differently?”). • Clearly linked to theory (“How can the theory help me improve?”). 4. REFLECTION ON INFLUENCING FACTORS (LEARNING UNIT 2) (±1 MINUTE) Explain how your life and environment affect your thinking. Briefly reflect on how factors such as: • Stress • Motivation • Sleep • Learning environment GENERAL GUIDELINES: - Think of your video as answering ONE main questions: “How do I think and learn, and how can I improve it using psychology?” - Focus on understanding and application. - Avoid reading directly from a script - Ensure clear audio and visibility. - You must submit your own work. Plagiarism will be dealt with according to university policy. - Submit via myModules - Use accessible format (e.g. MP4) - File name: StudentNumber_AssignmentNumber If you understand how you learn, you will be able to understand how your learners learn. PED3701/ASSIGNMENT 3/2026 5 ASSESSMENT CRITERIA CRITERIA DESCRIPTION MARKS Application of theory Accurate explanation and meaningful application of Learning Unit 3 theory. 30 Cognitive awareness Insight into own thinking and learning processes. 25 Strategies for learning Practical, theory-informed improvement strategies. 20 Integration of learning units Effective use of Learning Unit 1, 2 and 3. 10 Communication Clarity and engagement 15
