Newspapers

Newspapers report lots of types of crime including paper versions and also online
versions. Crimes are usually a big part of newspapers as they bring a lot of media
attention. Newspapers often use dramatisation to exaggerate crimes by only focusing
on the action of the crime instead of the victim or offender as a way of entertainment for
the readers which gives a false view of current crimes to the public. Many crimes which
aren’t seen as entertaining to report aren’t reported as often in the newspapers or on
the front page because they don’t fit the key news values, meaning the public are given
an inaccurate view of current crime statistics. An example of newpapers which report
crime is the daily mail, which is a popular newspaper. The dail mail tends to exaggerate
certain crimes, for example ‘chaos engulfs britain again’ which is a clear dramatisation
of the crime. On the other hand, the Lancashire Evening Post tend to use less dramatic
language and portray a more accurate picture of the crime , “five people arrested after
police conduct drug raids”.

Television

TV programmes can either broadcast real crime or even crime fiction. They mainly focus
on violent exciting crimes, especially in fiction, such as murder and kidnapping. TV
programmes often have a set way of how they portray crimes, males are usually the
offender and females are often the main victims. They also give an exaggerated view of
police clear ups, as they often portray police as the heros who always solve the crime,
which doesn’t match up with real clear up statistics. An example of a real crime TV
show is The Night Stalker. This TV show focuses on catching a serial killer in the US
where the offender is a young male from working class. The TV show portrays the police
as heros for catching the killer but wasn’t able to cover up the laziness showed by the
police. An example of a fiction crime TV show is Law and Order. Law and Order focuses
on rapes and murder, also mainly portraying the male as the offender and the female as
the victim. This TV show also trys to portray the police as amazing heros who solve every
case with no fail, which isnt reality.

Film

Films often involve some sort of crime and up to a fifth of films focus on crime. Recently,
crime in films has become more gory and explicit which has led people to suggest that
overly gory and violent films have influenced many to commit violent acts themselves.
Many movies tend to glamourise certain crimes such as drug dealing or murder. An
example of this is the James Bond movies, which glamourise state crimes making it look
more appealing to the viewers. On the other hand, the joker 2 dissuades those from
committing murder, as it shows the true reality of living in high security prisons and the
consequence of committing crimes.
