Three follow-up activities for exploiting the authentic text with advanced students

First Activity
a) A dictionary activity, for vocabulary and dictionary skills development AFTER the class have
read or listened to your selected text.
This could be used later in the same lesson or in another lesson. You can use the vocabulary items
you have selected for pre-teaching or make a different selection. The vocabulary must be from the
text or clearly relevant to the text.

Time 20 minutes
To allow students to work on their own to find vocabulary from the text
Aims in the dictionary, and learn, on their own, their meanings, definitions,
form, use, and pronunciation and strengthen their vocabulary.
Give each student a dictionary and explain the assignment.
Students must find the definition of nine of the words from my pre-
selected vocabulary, and three of their own from the text. In addition,
each word must be labelled as the correct word class (noun, verb, etc).
The worksheet will have additional questions.
While students are working, walk around the classroom and monitor

them to make sure the meanings they are writing are correct and
accurate, and be present to offer help when asked questions or for
suggestions.
After they have finished, read through the worksheet out loud (first the
definitions of the six words suggested from the text, and then ask
students to offer up some of their own. Drill students for pronunciation
and for understanding.
