MGMT 443 EXAM #2 QUESTIONS AND VERIFIED
ANSWERS

What is performance management?
is a continuous process of identifying, measuring, and developing the performance of
individuals and teams and aligning performance with the strategic goals of the
organization. (it is a structure of development and feedback designed to ensure
everyone in the organization: is progressing and developing, is headed in the
appropriate direction)

Why is performance management important?
It is the process that organizations commonly use to systematically improve the
profitability of the organization through a focus on its people. ( if we can get everyone to
perform better and more effectively year over year, we should see meaningful progress
year over year (bad>good) (good>great) (great>great). Performance management, if
done well, allows an organization to care for its most valuable resource.)

What are the three main elements of performance management?
set performance expectations, assess performance, performance feedback & review.
(organizations often use this process to do two things: determine raises, bonuses,
promotions, firings (fairly). Employee development.

What are the three main reasons why performance management is not more effective?

--managers don't take adequate time for it (they have their own stuff to do)
--performance is not measured effectively ( this leads to ineffective evaluations and
feedback)
--evaluations/performance appraisals are emotionally charged meetings, and managers
try to do both evaluations and development feedback in the same meeting.
--poor communication expectations are not clearly set/provided. a lack of consistent
communication and feedback * developmental feedback is not effective- not specific-not
immediate--biased.

What is required of managers to help their employees continually improve?
1. High-quality leader-follower relationships. 2. Effective communication (generally &
feedback)

, What follower perception best explains the relationship between leadership behaviors
and follower performance?
-LMX, -motivation, -fairness, -trust, -commitment.

What is LMX?
leader member exchange quality of the leader-follower relationship

Why is it important that leaders/managers develop positive relationships with those they
lead/manage?
Leaders behaviors is not likely to be effective at impacting performance if the leader
does not have a positive relationship with his/her followers. This means that as leaders,
we need to consciously develop positive relationships with those we lead.

What do leaders/managers need to do to effectively communicate (we highlighted six
things)? Why is each important?
ask questions & listen, (clearly communicate)- purpose and goals, - directions and
expectations, -recognition at least once every 7 days, -care, -continuous development
and feedback.

Generally, how effective is feedback?
1/3 of all feedback results in decreased performance.

Why aren't employees very good at receiving feedback?
Defensiveness- employees often see feedback as a form of attack, so they engage in
self-protection (rather than listening, energy is spent on constructing a defense)
--Disconfirmation- employees feel put down, ineffectual, or insignificant. ( rather than
listening, they focus more on establishing self-worth)

What are the six recommendations for giving effective feedback? Why is each
important?
1. have continuous positive discussions. 2. consider our approach ( are we using a
weakness-based approach, or a strengths-based approach?) 3. Ensure feedback giver
and receiver are on the same page. 4. Focus on knowledge and skills, not talents. 5.
use appropriate communication. 6. Follow up.

1. since feedback is commonly considered to be negative interaction, we need to be
sure that: the only communication that we have with others is not just feedback related.
we have at least 3 positive interactions for every 1 negative interaction (build our bank
account) they know that we are on their side prior to giving the feedback. 2. weakness
