Essential Practices for Supporting Diverse Learners D169
Task 4: Multi-Tiered Intervention Supports
A. Analyze a learning intervention support appropriate for Tier 1 of a multi-tiered
system by doing the following:
1. Describe learning support appropriate for Tier 1.
A learning support appropriate for Tier 1 is differentiating instruction. “Differentiating
instruction may mean teaching the same material to all students using a variety of
instructional strategies, or it may require the teacher to deliver lessons at varying levels of
difficulty based on the ability of each student.” (Weselby, 2021)
2. Describe a learning need and why the learning intervention support in part A1 is
appropriate to address that specific need.
Having a class of students that have different learning styles.
Differentiated instruction can be used for a learning need like having a class of students with
a variety of learning styles. Using differentiated instruction, students may be assigned to
read a story. The students would then have to summarize the story. The students can have a
choice of how they report this information. They can write a book report, they can draw a
picture, they can create a display, they can record a summary of the main ideas. This learning
support is appropriate for different learning styles because it offers a variety of ways for the
students to shows what they have learned in a way that is best for them.
B. Analyze positive behavioral intervention support appropriate for Tier 2 of a multi-
tiered system by doing the following:
1. Describe positive behavioral intervention support appropriate for Tier 2.
A positive behavioral support appropriate for tier 2 is a weekly social skills group for a
small group of students who need additional behavior supports.
2. Describe a behavioral situation and why the positive behavioral intervention support in part
B1 is appropriate to address that behavior.
A behavioral situation that a weekly social skills group would be appropriate for students
who use inappropriate language and are constantly disruptive. The group would be a way
for the students to learn how to adapt their behaviors in social settings. At each weekly
meeting, the students can dress up and the teacher could work on different skills with the
students and review with them the incorrect and correct ways to address different social
situations and appropriate and inappropriate language. The students and teacher may
work through scenarios and the appropriate way to react in each. This behavior support is
appropriate to address the behaviors because it provides more focused and targeted
support on the specific behavior issues the students are having. The skills that are learned
