Positive Feedback mechanisms - ANSWER-Positive feedback is when a system
tends to increase output. The product of a reaction influences or increases the
forward direction of the system: in positive feedback systems the presence of a
product (or signal) results in an increase in the production (amplification) of that
product (or signal).
Positive feedback example:
One common example of positive feedback is the network effect, where more
people are encouraged to join a network the larger that network becomes. The result
is that the network grows more and more quickly over time.
Negative feedback mechanisms - ANSWER-Negative feedback is when a system
tends to reduce output or the product prevent the reaction from continuing: negative
feedback (or feedback inhibition) systems, where the presence of a product of the
system results in a decrease in the production of that product.
Negative feedback example:
* Neurons in the hypothalamus secrete thyroid releasing hormone (TRH), which
stimulates cells in the anterior pituitary to secrete thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).
* TSH binds to receptors on epithelial cells in the thyroid gland, stimulating synthesis
and secretion of thyroid hormones, which affect probably all cells in the body.
* When blood concentrations of thyroid hormones increase above a certain
threshold, TRH-secreting neurons in the hypothalamus are inhibited and stop
secreting TRH. This is an example of "negative feedback".
